Clay Knife Handle Design - Inspired by "Loki" on Disney+

Fun fact about me: I love all things Marvel. Not only that, but Halloween is coming up, and I am definitely feeling the spirit of spooky season. So I thought to myself, "how can I make the coolest Marvel character costume yet?!?" After watching the show "Loki" on Disney+, I have been excited to dress up as the main character. But this year, I wanted to truly customize my costume. One of his sci-fi props features quite a boring knife, so I decided to spice up the design of the handle as well as the blade itself and make my own from scratch.

Loki's Dagger Grip - Reimagined

This project is all about exploring one of the most
important physical interaction points of any product,
the handle. Comfort, safety, leverage, grip, style...
the handle and touch points of a tool, gadget or any
physical product can often make or break its success. In
this case, I thought this sci-fi prop could use a design that is actually worthy of a Marvel superhero.

Exploration + Sketching

I developed a new ergonomic form in 3D using Chavant Industrial Clay overtop a geometrically accurate 3D print. I did a lot of exploration using sketching before getting to my final design. Process photos are shown below.

Shaping the Knife

As an intermediate level blacksmith, I wanted to challenge myself to shape an intricate knife like this. Due to the complexity of knife design, including the bevel angel calculations and, honestly, ensuring symmetry while shaping by hand, the blade is currently a work in progress as of 10/25/21. Below are blade sketches as well as various process photos!
